Sintra

Today we played tourist but also hiked. Yesterday we could see the Moorish Castle ramparts from below at the National Palace. Today we hiked up to the Moorish Castle, and then on to the Peña Palace still higher yet. At about 1528 feet elevation gain, it was a workout equal to a Kim exercise class.

The Peña Palace is by far the most popular site around. We were visiting on a Sunday, but we still waited well over an hour in a congested line even after purchasing timed-entry tickets.

The Peña Palace has been updated over many years. Much of it was built by King Ferdinand II over remains of an ancient convent from the 16th century. It occupies the highest spot on the hill incorporating many architectural styles and colors.

Ann Prazza: The Triton Gate fellow is quite distinctive looking. 2022/09/13 at 11:45 pm
