Pecene to Tui--Spain!

Rain was expected, and we heard it all through the night. By breakfast time, it was overcast but not raining. We prepared for the walk by wearing rain pants and jackets, and had on-and-off showers, but nothing too terrible.

This is the last day in Portugal, as we will pass into Spain as we cross the river into Tui. Our time zone moves forward one hour and the language changes.

10.74 miles hiking 10:07am to 5:39 pm. Only 597 feet elevation gain. 13.3 miles for the total day.

Today’s video had to be broken into two parts. The first link will open in a new window as usual, but the second link will load in the same window. As usual, close the window to go back to reading the blog.

mountain pathway
The path now heads down the mountain after all the elevation of Sunday.
Richard on a rainy path
Some evidence of last night’s rain but the puddles are avoidable.
Gunilla from Sweden
We saw Gunilla from Sweden at the same cafe where we had some lunch, but had no conversation. Later, we were following her and realized she had missed a turn. It was too late to call out for her, but Richard waited patiently on the corner, hoping she would turn around so he could signal her. It took a while, but he was finally able to signal the way.
Helena from Capetown and her friend, Jerry, from Dublin
It was good to see Helena and her friend, Jerry, from Dublin, Ireland.
Richard outside Valenca fortress
The Camino takes us right through the ancient fortifications of Valença, Portugal. Here we were just getting close to the city walls.
Valenca fortress with grazing sheep
More city walls facing the river and Tui. A lady was leading her sheep down through one of the passages. With no dog to help and only her stick, it was slow going.
pilgrim messages
This ancient church had pilgrim messages attached to the chapel.
Valenca chapel with tiled walls
Another chapel in the church had the tiled walls. One wonders if this may be our last view of the beautiful tiles.
Portugal sign
Looking back to say goodbye.
Spain sign
The next chapter.
Portuguese marker to Santiago
The Portuguese marker: 118.464 kilometers (to Santiago).
Spanish marker to Santiago
Yes, the Spanish marker agrees: 118.464 kilometers to Santiago.
Tui hotel
Our hotel for the next three nights is in the old town of Tui, near the Cathedral. Snacks were required with our celebratory beers as our dinner restaurant opens at 9 pm. We are definitely in Spain!

Comments:

Dan Hendry: Wendy and I need to take a trip like your’s. Noticed some nice stores along some of the city routes and it would be the first time we would have zero interest in buying something! Love the video tours of your different routes. 2022/10/11

Reply We bought some cards yesterday on 2000 years of Christianity—Richard wouldn’t buy it until we held it to see how much weight it would add. No sense looking at stores unless I want to go home without clothes. 2022/10/11

Ann Prazza:  Great Relive photos! Pete says “Bon Camino”you guys! Thankyou for remembering him! Love the smiles at your rest stop for lunch. 2022/10/11

Reply Bom Caminho, Pete—in our hearts forever. 2022/10/11

Wendy Hendry Loved the picture of the lady herding her sheep. I know those tiles are amazing in Portugal. Can’t remember any comparison in Spain. Wendy 2022/10/11

Reply: I’m going to keep looking but I think you may be right about the tiles. 2022/10/11
