Tui to O Porrino

Although it was a walking day from Tui to O Porriño, we were able to leave our luggage in our hotel room as we were coming back for one more night of lodging. We needed to arrive at the taxi meeting point by 3 pm so we were up and about early.

Hike 11.09 miles 8:56 am to 2:04 pm. 615 feet elevation gain. 16.2 total miles for the day.

Church of St. Bartolomè in Tui
The Church of St. Bartolomè was not open, but it dates loosely from the sixth century when Catholic priests established a headquarters in Tui.
The Ponte do Río Louro or Roman bridge
The Ponte do Río Louro or Roman bridge dates from the 1200’s, connecting Tui with towns along the Rio Miño and Rio Louro. it has been rebuilt and expanded over the years due to flooding. The Camino still passes over this bridge.

Although there was some walking along busy roads, much of this hike followed woodland paths.
Ponte das Febres over the River San Simon (Bridge of Fever)
The Ponte das Febres over the River San Simon marks the spot in 1246 when the Dominican friar, Pedro Gonzales, (later San Telmo), sick with fever, abandoned his trek to Santiago and returned to Tui where he died.

The Ponte das Febres is a simple Romanesque construction with a semi-circular arch.

A different kind of Camino path. The way is narrow, but the higher stones along the edge allow for farmers to keep their feet dry while leading their herds along flooded paths.

Wednesday was a Spanish holiday celebrating Christopher Columbus. Families were out enjoying the day.

Granite is cut in the mountains near O Porrino and it is used everywhere in houses and fences.

Since we were taxi’d back to Tui in mid-afternoon, we took the opportunity to go back across the river to Portugal to see some sights we missed.

The bridge began service in 1886 and is unusual in that it serves cars, trains, and pedestrians.

From the Portuguese side, the old town of Tui sits atop the hill.

Our last dinner in Tui was seated outside a tapas restaurant across from the Cathedral. Locals and families were enjoying the last few hours of their holiday.

Dan Hendry: Looked like one of your nicer days. Very pretty paths through the forest areas next to the streams. Sure you are enjoying being with more pilgrims on this part of the trip. 2022/10/14

Reply We are enjoying the woodland paths and quick meetings with pilgrims, but for the most part we are not traveling with the same people. We’re still enjoying time together. Three more days until Santiago! My third credential is almost full of stamps!. 2022/10/14
