Frije to Muxia

Another morning of rain and wind and forecasted thunderstorms. We have to move our luggage by taxi, and decided to ride along to spend more time in Muxia.

Fellow pilgrims Lola and Alfonso, from Spain, were staying at our turismo in Frixe, but they elected to walk on to Muxia.

6.0 miles total for the day.

Pilgrims Lola and Alfonso from Spain.
Muxia’s harbor.
There is a fish unique to this area, Congros, that must be dried. These racks are for drying, but they told us at the tourist office that there is some health problem so they are not drying (catching?) the fish now.
More coastline walking to the northern point of the peninsula. No homes or crops but several of these stone fenced areas.
The faro (lighthouse).
The church is called the Our Lady of the Boat (Nosa Señora da Barca). It is built on a pagan site, and was here for centuries before being destroyed by a Chistmas Day lightning fire in 2013. It has been rebuilt with some modern touches, but maintains a link to the sea. Although the church was closed, a door is left open with a window available to glimpse the inside. We planned to return for mass at 7 pm when the church would be open.
The church interior viewed from the open window.
The unusual altarpiece figures: the Virgin and angels appearing to a boatman.
Various boats are hung above the pews. Note that these boats are suspended by the angels.
The Virgin’s boat was supposedly petrified in the rocks. Here is the rudder stone and rocking hill stones.
his is the lover’s stone, Petra dos Namorados, where couples come to pledge their love.
The hill above town rises to a allow a 360 degree view. The wind is fierce!
Looking at town from the hilltop.
Walking out for evening mass, the light across the bay was perfect for a rainbow.
Another seaside sunset at Muxia.

Dan Hendry:  Wow, even getting prettier! So many interesting places you visited despite the rain. Must have been nice to have the extra time to explore. Feel more “in love” since your visit? Continue to enjoy your more relaxed days. Dan 22/10/21

Reply: Thanks, Dan. I’m glad we planned for these places, even though it makes the trip longer. It’s been nice that the rain has held off a bit each day so we can get out.
It’s been nice to have the time together—we haven’t had close ties with other folks but we savor each relationship, however short. 2022/10/21

Ann Prazza:  These pictures are so descriptive and I love the detail of the Altar figures in the church. And such a lovely spot on the hill! Rainbows and sunsets -I like it. 22/10/21

Reply: We like it too. I’m so glad we came to Muxia—a small town but many stories. 2022/10/21

Dave Wolf:  I am taken by the blue of the ocean enhanced by the “true blueness” of the sky. I presume that is not the camera’s doing but the nature of the atmosphere – clear, clean and beautiful. YOU MADE IT! Congratulations. Dave. 22/10/22

Reply: Thanks for your comments, Dave. None of the pictures are enhanced. Rainy days seem to bring on-and-off showers and it is so beautiful when the sun is out, however briefly. Muxia was one of our favorite days; now we’ve been to “land’s end” at two locations tied to the Camino. Happily, we have made this goal. On to the next adventure! 2022/10/23
