Mainz (All Saints Day)

We have a day in Mainz, a favorite spot from previous visits. Unfortunately, All Saints Day is a holiday for businesses and some museums. We had to wait for mass to end in churches before we could visit. The weather is a perfect sunny Fall day.

6.9 miles walking for the day.

shower controls in Mainz hotel
After two months of moving hotels most nights and figuring out the plumbing each day, we were stumped today. Neither of us could figure how to start the shower—either shower head. We had to ask at the desk and they had to ask the maid staff. It turns out you depress the button and hold until water begins flowing. That worked great until I couldn’t figure out how to stop the shower. I guess it’s really time to go home.

St. Stephen's Church in Mainz
St. Stephan’s Church, is a 14th century church that can trace back to 990 when the Holy Roman Empire ordered a church to be built. It was heavily damaged in World War II and was rebuilt as it had been except for the windows that were irreparably damaged. Artist Marc Chagall, a Jew, designed most of today’s blue windows telling mostly stories of the Old Testament. The windows were begun in 1973, and were finished just before Chagall died at age 98 in 1985.

St. Martin’s Cathedral in Mainz, Germany
Construction began on St. Martin’s Cathedral in 975 but most of the building is from the 11th to 13th centuries. There are many tombs and monuments to princes and archbishops.
