Bologna is a city famous for its colonnades, and the oldest university in the western world (1088). It is an epicurean capital of Emilia-Romagna where pasta is king and open-air markets exhibit their wares. We had seen many sights on previous visits, but it was good to remember.

The Church of San Pietri is designated as the cathedral, but is not the most popular.

The Basilica of San Petronio, on the Piazza Maggiore, is dedicated to Bologna’s patron, a fifth century bishop. Construction began in 1390 but the facade remains unfinished.

A meridian line, designed by the university instructor and astronomer, Giovanni Domenico Cassini, is inlaid in the Basilica floor. At 219 feet in length, it is one of the largest instruments in the world.

Piazza dell Nettuno with the mid-16th century fountain of Neptune, leads to Piazza Maggiore.

Petronius watches over the Piazza Maggiore.

Dave  Wolfe: Thanks for the visit to Bologna. The Cathedral was overwhelming. When inside the curved lines seem to reach up to the heavens. The night crew must spend hour polishing the marble floor for worshippers and tourists to slide on the next day. The merchants were optimistic that the food they laid out would be grabbed up by hungry visitors and hikers needing an apple or orange for their (your) packs.

Our cool season arrived today. Let’s hope we are through with the 90’s till next summer. And I hope you have nothing but good hiking weather…maybe with one or two light showers to keep cool. A Methodist “Shalom to you now.” Dave 2023/10/10 at 5:09 am

Julia Holman:I very much remember the fountain of Neptune. 🙂
Not a fan of the fence around it. 🙁 The open market looks amazing! 2023/10/10 at 4:58 pm

Reply: I agree about the ugly fence. However, there have been so many people around, it would be difficult to keep people out of the fountain, particularly with the hot temperatures this year. 2023/10/11 at 3:58 am

Julia Holman:I absolutely love the “relive” video of you both walking with the pictures….such a beautiful added dimension, feels like I’m there with you. (Next time) 2023/10/10 at 5:02 pm

Reply: Richard does a great job of Videos and is faster than I am. I will try to post his items quickly and then add my photos as time allows. Today is a long walk so we will hope it gets done. 2023/10/11 at 4:00 am
