Acquapendente to Bolsena

Rain was predicted for the day but it began with sunshine.

St. Rocco is the patron saint of pilgrims so we were happy to see a church dedicated to him be open.

Lots of narrow and one-way streets in Acquapendente.

The Torre julia de Jacobo commemorates the act of a courageous young girl in 1550 who ran to close the city gate when the city was being attacked. The tower now houses city offices and tourist information.

Lunch at our half-way point, San Lorenzo Nuovo.

Heading a few yards beyond our lunch stop, we have our first view of Lago Bolsena.

Our trail avoids the road, but the forest path seems fairly new with some challenging spots. It’s slower going, but definitely preferable to roadside traffic.

Rain is on-and-off but we see rain over the lake. Please let it stay over there until we get safely to our hotel!

First views of Bolsena’s castle and a church.

Heading to the hotel on the steep roads down through the castle neighborhood.

Finally at the hotel next to the lake. It’s a ghost town here in the off season! We hoped for an easy dinner but had to go back towards the old town to find anything open. The skies unleashed right after we arrived at the hotel, but we waited out the worst of the rain and then had a pleasant dinner.

Comments:

Wendy Hendry: How are you both holding up? Finding any differences between this trip and previous hiking adventures? Really like the area you are walking through. Very photogenic ! The trails look a bit more challenging? The food looks really delicious. 2023/10/28 at 2:32 am

Reply: We are enjoying this trek although it has been different than previous years. Every day is a bit different and maybe we’re a bit less obsessed than before. Trails are definitely challenging and change sometimes from the guidebook. There is not as much infrastructure to support pilgrims—sometimes there is no stopping point from our point leaving until our destination. We carry water, cheese, and bread or biscotti and have also asked our hotel to fix a sack lunch. Still, it’s Italy and it’s beautiful! 2023/10/28 at 6:28 am

Kathy Nichols: Glad to see and hear you are enjoying this trek. I have to say – when I sit down to follow your progress it is usually mid-day and I’m not the least bit hungry. However….after seeing all that delicious food my stomach starts growling! It all looks so good. 2023/10/29 at 10:59 pm

Reply: We have been enjoying amazing meals and always are trying to have new things. I’m worried about fitting into my clothes despite the walking! 2023/10/31 at 8:55 am
