It looks as if today will turn more interesting with a charming hill town our destination. Unfortunately, things did not turn out exactly as planned, but we had another adventure.
As several friends and family know, it is hardly a Holman vacation without a trip to a doctor. This is no exception.
I took a face-down hard fall. We carry first aid kits so we were able to cobble together a hand bandage and headed to a local pharmacy for help. Staff there advised a hospital visit and helped with the taxi call. It was now close to rush hour on busy highways, but the taxi driver knew the procedure to get us to the right place. Triage cleaned me up and put me in the system for stitches. It was a long wait, but the doctor was efficient and I had 4 stitches, enough antibiotics for overnight, and an antibody shot since my tetanus shot has almost reached the 10-year limit. Since I have no local insurance, we had to settle the bill before leaving the hospital — only 45 Euros ($47.25)! It is never a pleasant time in the emergency room, but I have respect and great thanks for the way I was treated.
After another taxi ride to our scheduled hotel, we still had time to make dinner in a town known for dishes with truffles.
Unknown: The holman warriors-way to keep going Jan! I love that you just keep having adventures no matter what. 2023/10/15 at 2:39 pm
Reply: Sorry—I don’t know who might have written this comment. It is a requirement to enter your own information or I see it as coming from Richard Holman. I have not figured out how to make it clearer. 2023/10/15 at 3:03 pm
Dan Hendry: How unfortunate to have a fall early on the trip! At least it wasn’t super serious though stitches doesn’t sound like much fun. Stay safe and alert as you travel on. Thinking of you! 2023/10/16 at 12:51 am
Reply: Thanks Dan. This too will pass. (Maybe a new mantrum?) 2023/10/16 at 3:46 am
Kathy Nichols: Oh Jan, I am a little behind – I am so, so sorry to hear of your “face-down hard fall!” Are you trying to copy me? I don’t recommend it. At least you got away with no broken bones. It cannot be at all comfortable to have stitches in your hand. I know you love an adventure, but perhaps try to rein it in a little? 2023/10/19 at 4:36 am
Reply: Copying you was the first thing I thought of. I was slightly on my left side so that’s where all the bruises are. Still, I know I was lucky. 2023/10/19 at 6:04 am
Dave Wolfe: I can relate to the fall. It often happens so fast you oly ealize t when you fast in one with mother early…or in my case a few stiches a go, on the side walk. Glad you got good care. March on! Dave 2023/10/19 at 7:06 pm
Wendy Hendry: Ouch! So sorry about your injury. What a way to begin your trip. We thought of you in our class today. Lois and Elwin are back from their trip up the coast and had much to report. Unfortunately, like you, Elwin hurt himself. He tripped on a curb and fell on his face, but fortunately mends well and looked fine. Be careful. 2023/10/20 at 2:41 am
Reply: Sorry for Elwin. I hate to think of all of us falling, but at least we’re still moving and the body is resilient. 2023/10/20 at 4:12 am
