2023 Saturday Nov. 18

Cadiz, Spain

We did not book an excursion but just planned to visit the sights on our own.

Heading off the ship on a beautiful day.

We passed an open church and checked inside. It is Iglesia decSan Agustin, part of the Convent of San Augustine from 1617-1647. The doorway is Mannerist from 1647.

The main altarpiece.

Next we viewed the 1st century BC Roman Theatre. It was mentioned by classical authors and once housed 10,000 spectators as one of the largest built by Rome. It was abandoned in the 4th century and a fortress was built on its ruins in the 13th century. These latest remains were discovered in 1980.

Nearby the Catedral Vieja is the old cathedral, from the 16th and 17th centuries. It was converted from a mosque in the 13th century, then destroyed by Anglo-Dutch troops in 1596 and then rebuilt.

Now there is a new cathedral in Cadiz. We decided the ticket line was too long so we elected to come back. No go—the line was impossible!

Heading out to the beach, these mature trees were in a street side park.

There was a fortress, so we walked out to investigate. It was closed.

By now everyone in town was out for a Saturday afternoon shopping spree. Time to head back to the ship.

Another interesting tree on the way back to the ship. There were parrots in the tree!

A restaurant advertises its fresh fare in front.

Interesting columns.
