Today was a travel day between Washington and Roanoke. We expected to drop our luggage and possibly explore a bit, but Amtrak did not check luggage to Roanoke, so we stayed at Union Station with our bags.
Roanoke is a major train hub but, surprisingly, does not have an Amtrak station. We disembarked on the platform, and had to call Uber/Lift for a ride (no taxis in Roanoke).

Beautiful train station, makes train travel seem very desirable.
There were lots of train riders in the station, so train travel is still pretty popular in the Northeast. The Sunday night train to New York had quite a line.
We enjoyed resting at the restaurant upstairs and not fighting for a place downstairs in the queue. However, we also had a seat already assigned. I remembered all the times Joe Biden said he rode Amtrak, but I never saw any recognizable lawmakers. Hope they still ride!
I found you. I found your link and I see that you are looking for lawmakers in the wrong city. They may be in Chicago or on vacation. Maybe some will be in the Alps. You never know who you may run into. Enjoy what is next on your travels.
We’re still working on a few leads like being able to push notifications to you that we’ve posted something new. Meanwhile, I’m glad you found us and we’ll keep posting. We rode with Ronald Reagan years ago on a trip through Washington, so I’m always on the lookout for elected officials. Reagan was charming and engaging, but it was one of my all-time roughest flights. Just a memory: if it had been smooth sailing, I probably would have forgotten it.
Love the photos from DC and the mall. Maybe climb so other towers in Europe, Rich? 😀
Richard is always ready to climb a tower. Today he found a church tower in Zurich so I’m sure this is just the beginning. I’m always happy to do something else.
Hope this gets through. “They” make registering awfully problematical (!)
Anyway, love your photos! (I’ve been unable, so far, to get registered so bear with me.
We’ll figure it out once you’re both back home 😉
Sorry about the problems registering, Rob. It keeps out the “advertising.” When we were starting this year and did not have registration required, I was getting company spam trying to post to the blog! The bots are going wild! Anyway, last year we had some posts where there was no signature or identifying info, so we couldn’t tell who commented. Registering solves those issues and we enjoy the personal touch of who is commenting. Thank you for sticking with it!
Ditto what Rob said. You might never know I’m a college graduate because it sure took me a long time to figure the registrations part out! BUT looks like I finally made it, so all is well….
I’m sorry it’s been confusing, and now I guess some folks are even having troubles logging in. Thanks for all of you helping each other out. Richard has volunteered to make a video if people continue to have trouble. Of course, a teacher may add some of his own spice to the project!
