Roanoke, VA

We had hoped to visit family in Roanoke, but discovered late last week that a cousin tested positive for COVID and the rest of the family was exposed. Plans were already in place, so we decided to just explore the city.

Richard recorded his impressions of the day on his Relive video. You can view it here: https://www.relive.cc/view/v36AR3NPYZq

Ready to leave the hotel for a hike downtown to explore Roanoke.
A covered walkway allows walkers to safely cross the numerous railroad tracks sheltered from the weather.
The City Market Building is a relic of past days when farmers would bring their wares to a large city market for trade. Now it hosts several restaurants.
A downtown street with 90 degree parking before old and new businesses. Streetlights were decorated with live flowers.
Building murals reflect past advertised businesses and items.
The Roanoke Star atop Mill Mountain, one of the largest illuminated man-made stars in the world. It symbolizes Roanoke’s nickname as the “Star City of the South.”
The Texas Tavern, operating 24/7 (according to Cousin Jim) since 1930. With only 10 seats, you must time your visit carefully.
The Texas Tavern after 2–finally a seat. Unusual offerings—cheesy burger with an egg, chili, and breakfast items. Don’t even think of asking for ketsup or French fries!

Heading back to the hotel, we wanted to visit the Basilica of St. Andrew that we had seen from a distance, but where mass was being celebrated when we were heading to town. Happily we were able to visit.

The Basilica of St. Andrew on one of Roanoke’s highest knolls. The cornerstone was laid in 1900, and the church was finished two years later.

St. Patrick is represented to honor the large Irish population of Roanoke.
The rose window over the main entrance honoring St. Cecelia.

Back to the hotel for an easy evening preparing to travel tomorrow.

  1. Stay safe! COVID is at some of its highest levels! Wendy and I are very jealous every time we view one of your “eating out” pictures. We are soooo tired of cooking and preparing meals. Would love to have some extended time of just eating out.
Loved the stained glass. We have always enjoyed our travel time in churches. So much history.
So neat to see the map of your daily travels. Thanks for all the work you do to share your adventures.

    1. We are double masking and doing our best to be safe. Luckily, our weather has been good and we have been able to sit outside. Not too many others are masking, so we know we risk exposure. You stay safe at home too.
