We bid farewell to Lucerne and headed to Grindelwald. This is the first of our 10 Eurailpass trips, and the technology is a bit daunting. We also have a Jungfrau pass to cover transportation around Grindelwald that is not covered by Eurail passes. Confusing at best, but we have to commend the Swiss for their clean, timely, and numerous public transportation choices. Even with the problems caused by recent rains destroying some of our tracks, there were bus transfers in place to cover. Unfortunately, it was confusing for everyone and so many people on the weekend!
That scenery is just gorgeous! Looks like you had quite the long travel day. I hope the cheese was delicious 🙂
The cheese was good, and I’ll admit that it’s better to be able to sit maskless on a couch and relax with bread, cheese, and wine. I enjoy restaurant meals, but it is tiresome if too often, and usually more food than we need. The hummus and yoghurt are also good here.
The churches are amazing the way the artists wanted to create a visual and sound chamber for worship. The church was an important building in these towns. Of course, the bridge also was important. Everything has a mark of its place in history, including the masks. I see you made it to another valley. Hmm, sleeping in a prison. Nice to know they don’t need the building as a prison now. Will you have ghosts stories to tell when you gat back?
I love the variety inside the churches and we always try to go in where possible. We also learn a lot of history in these churches besides even the religious stories.
The prison hotel had its pluses and minuses. It was more economical for some with dormitory rooms more like a hostel. It was in a convenient location to most of the city. It made us more curious to delve deeper into its past. However, it had no AC so we had to have windows open. Our room was on the first floor (would have been second floor in the US) above the restaurant, so we had noise until about 11:30 pm. Construction is everywhere, so workers started early. Still we slept pretty well and it’s nice to be in a vibrant crowd.
No ghosts that we know of (they probably only haunt the cell guests) but what a history. It turns out that the guillotine found in the prison attic was used in the last execution. Switzerland outlawed capital punishment in 1942 (except for military crimes). More trivia learned on the travel adventure.
What an excellent adventure! Thank you for for inviting us to come along, virtually! : )
We enjoy the travel adventure and document it so we don’t forget. Having folks follow the blog keeps it more interesting with comments and questions. Glad you have gotten on and can join in. Thanks for following us.
Looked like a big travel day! Such beautiful scenery in this part of Switzerland. Wish we all could have been with you on this scenic journey. One of our favorite areas of Europe to explore. Thanks for posting the eating out foodie pictures as Wendy and I get ready for another home cooking ordeal!

We’re mixing it up this year. Switzerland is particularly expensive so we’ve booked apartments and spent evenings in. Bread, wine, cheese, and fruit have kept us going.
