Travel Ljubljana to Budapest

On Wednesday night we decided to change our train plans. We booked a direct train that would save about two hours and keep us from missing tight connections. It would still be a long day of travel.

8:00 am to 7:10 pm.

There is no Relive today.

Ljubljana is a wonderful city with pedestrian-only areas (including where our apartment is) but it is difficult to call a taxi for pickup. Across the river is an area near the grocery where taxis can pick up fares. The problem was that there were about four of us waiting for a pick up and it was difficult to juggle who called and our order of pick up.
We purchased seat assignments, but our train car did not have the seat numbers that were assigned. We had a bit of juggling to find empty seats.
In eastern Slovenia, the train traveled through some wine areas and more farmland in Hungary.
Lots of train stations with names that don’t come easily to us.
Another neat farm in the Hungarian countryside.
Our apartment in Budapest. It is large and in a convenient area, but is above bars and restaurants and is loud at night. Our rooms have the brown shutters—the third level (called the first floor).

  1. That looks like a great night life spot, I know that you and dad have a beer or two by the time you leave 🙂 Glad you adjusted your travel plans to fit!

    1. We were certainly glad we changed the train plans, since Thursday morning we got an email notice telling us one of the train schedules changed and we would certainly have missed a 7-minute connection.
We have not been to the restaurant downstairs as it is crowded with a youngish crowd. Thursday night we ate down the street where you pick out your raw meat and they grill it to order. Friday we had beer and sausages and Wiener Schnitzel and fries. Tonight (Saturday) we have a reservation for a very fancy restaurant atop castle hill. We believe that it is the same restaurant where we went 50 years ago with Grandma and Grandpa.

  2. I’m always amazed at how well you trouble shoot and adjust to schedule changes and finding transportation when you need it. You should hire yourselves as personal travel guides! I’d hire you for sure. We’ve been to Budapest several times and our favorite activity you might want to try is a night time cruise as the Parliament buildings bridges and other areas are lit up. Great photo ops!

    1. We have definitely had to keep up on travel changes this trip. Luckily we have Eurail passes so the main travel is not “booked” until the journey is activated, and that can be when we get on the train to leave. It is only seat reservations that we are changing, but the cost is minimal. Yesterday we arrived in Vienna, and although the full train was scheduled to continue to Salzburg and Munich, everyone had to offload because of track repairs. We like to be a bit more proactive on changes to avoid those last minute surprises.
Even in Budapest we saw a lot of trees and rubbish floating in the Danube. Although we know the river was at a red alert flood level, it was not bad when we were there.
Sorry, no time for a boat tour in Budapest. So much we didn’t get to see—it would be a great place to revisit.
