Travel Budapest to Vienna

We were ready early and had an Uber taxi ready to  take us to the train station. No problems—our train arrived and we claimed our reserved seats. We had only a 2 1/2 hour ride, but the entire train was offloaded in Vienna due to track repair after Danube flooding. Word to the wise: we need a plan B for the next train tickets that will take us along the Danube.

Caught the Budapest taxi about 8:45 am; arrived Vienna apartment about 1:15 pm. 1.74 miles, 4274 steps. Sunny but temperature in the low 60’s.

No Relive video today.

Goodbye to our Budapest apartment complex.
These are the quiet restaurant areas below our apartment—quiet now but never from dusk to 3 am.
A neighborhood posted sign to give rules though nothing was followed that I could see. Have you ever imagined that there would have to be a sign prohibiting public urination?
Our taxi driver dropped us off at Kelenfold Station and pointed at this building. Like many train stations we have seen, the station is outdated but underground areas between the tracks are lively sources of food and information. We were able to buy a breakfast pastry with the very last of our Hungarian money.
Back in Austria, we’re seeing some wind turbines from the train.
As we’re nearing Vienna, there are many more tracks branching off.
This statue is almost directly in front of our apartment. It is a memorial to Wilhelm von Tegetthoff, an Austrian admiral who served during two wars in the 1860’s.
Our apartment building door here. There is a restaurant below us but we are on the 5th floor and the restaurant crowd seems much more subdued than in Budapest.

  1. Hope you are in Vienna for several days. So many museums and interesting places to visit. Hope you have the energy to keep up the great pace the allows you to visit and see so much. You and Richard are amazing travelers. Wendy and I leave Friday for 2 weeks of a cruise of the upper Mississippi but feel “very lazy” after following your adventures as we won’t have to change lodging, plan daily transportation, be prepared to walk 5 miles or more each day or find places to eat. Lazy travelers we are this trip!

    1. Our Vienna stop is way too short—only three nights and two full days. Still, we will fill it with what we can. My parents lived in Vienna so we had visits with them and are channeling their spirits with some visits to familiar places. There are always some surprises, and tonight is the opera!
Safe travels for you both. Lazy travel, as you call it, is always enjoyable. I hope for good weather for the Mississippi area.

  2. Richard and Jan, as usual the sky above the Parliament building at sunset caught my attention. The street scenes, taxis, bridges also special but the very best of what I read today catching up on posts was your dinner. The scene was exquisite including your hiking clothes. I would not have recognized you in anything but those clothes. I hope the wine did indeed make you strong.

    1. Budapest skies were usually stunning, but particularly so on the night we had dinner at the Fisherman’s Bastion. It’s both funny and a complement that you know us in hiking clothes. I thought we dressed up a bit for dinner, but we didn’t want to lose any of the museum time heading back to change clothes. We were the first ones in the restaurant anyway, so we didn’t worry. Time vs beauty is an easy choice for me.

  3. I have been chasing you all over Central Europe and now into Austria. Your endurance is awesome. Of course, the magnificent beauty is energizing. Vienna must seem like a welcome homecoming for Jan, and an enriching time for both of you. We enjoyed folk music in the park next to the Opera House , although I did sneak into the lobby where I heard an Aria. We enjoyed the Schoenberg gardens a couple of times and stayed in the hotel across from the palace which was used for overflow guests. I would mention our present heatwave but I’m sure others have taken the temperature for you. Hope you enjoy every minute of your excursion. The Lord bless you and keep you(in good shape)

    1. We are enjoying every minute of our vacation, and Vienna was wonderful but just too short. There were many remembrances of Mom and Dad that make me happy—what a gift they gave us in loving travel. My father could speak many languages “a little” but was unafraid to err in just trying. My mother could handle everyday tasks in whatever country, from getting Corn Flakes in post-war Italy for her toddlers, to celebrating Thanksgiving with other expatriates. We loved the opera last night and the arias were spectacular. I can only imagine what you might have heard on your visit. We dressed the best we could at the state opera, but still wore hiking boots (sigh!) Not much more vacation left but we’re making the best of it. See you soon!
