We left Raleigh about noon to drive to Roanoke, Virginia. We had dinner with Richard’s first cousin, Jim, and his son and family. It was a bit cooler and much less humid—part of the perfect evening.
Both Jim and his son, Matt, live in Salem, a suburb of Roanoke.
We were invited to dinner at Matt and Jenny’s house so pictures were in order. (L-R) Jim, Matt holding Luke, Caroline in front, Jenny.
Another family picture.
After a delicious lasagna dinner, we played a game of Uno with Caroline and Luke.
Jim and Matt supervised the game, and we had an opportunity to share the Holman rules for dealing with losing the game.
The men shared family stories of their common grandparents while the kids rode bicycles and played in the yard.
Caroline was explaining how the clouds hold water and lessons she learned in school last year in first grade.
All too soon it was time to get PJs on and slow down for bed.
It was exactly the kind of evening I enjoy in Southern California with my cousins—some lying and bragging, and letting the kids be themselves and entertaining us.

Nothing like being with family. Glad you get this opportunity as a pretrip venture.
Well said. Nothing like it.
