The hot weather is becoming an issue, but temperatures are getting worse as the week progresses. Hotels generally have only a duvet as covers (no top sheet) and no air conditioning.
Today’s hike through the moors offers very little shade and significant elevation gain. There is only one village after leaving Great Broughton, and it is the tiny village of Kildale past the 10-mile mark.

12.82 miles, 2488 feet elevation gain. Temperature in the high 80’s with only a little relief in the evening.
The hotel van handled small pick-ups and drop offs. Why does every morning begin with a steep uphill climb? This one had blowing wind to boot!
The road is calm and a perfect time to be out on a level pathway. Deschristian from England caught up to us and was interested in Richard’s Camino shell on his pack. Come to find out, all three of us have done Camino Frances and the Portuguese Camino. He proudly showed us his Camino tattoos: Frances 2023 and Portuguese 2025.
Roseberry Topping was once a symmetrical dome. It changed after mining caused a slide on one side.
On the right side horizon, there is a tall pencil-like structure that is the Captain. Cook monument.
Another John Wesley marker referencing his activity in this area. He preached under a tree in this small village of Kildale. There is also a bench placed in 2000.
Kildale is a tiny village, but they have a church dedicated to St. Cuthbert. Although the current church was rebuilt in 1868, the original is Saxon and churches have existed on this site for a thousand years. Viking burials were found beneath the floor along with several tombs bearing Percy arms. The church bell still used today was cast in the 14th century.
This stained glass window from 1992 shows St. Cuthbert surrounded by six local scenes including farming and shepherding, as well as the train coming to Kildale.
After seeing it in the distance for two days, we finally arrive at the monument.
Rob was our taxi driver assigned to pick us up 5 pm to return us to our hotel. We arrived completely shattered at 4:56 pm.
Rob was born and still lives in Great Ayerton, the childhood home of Captain Cook situated at the base of the monument hill. He is very proud of the town’s native son, and showed off his birthplace and his school.

You have been on very strenuous trails! WOW!!! But you have visited remarkable history. We did not realize that John Wesley traveled so far.
