Lisbon to Vila Franca de Xira

First walking day. Rain was forecast for most of the day so we started with raincoats, rain pants, gaiters, and ponchos in the backpack. We had a transport to get us a few miles out of the industrial zone, and weather completely changed to sun and clouds. Not to make it easy, the weather was on and off so we changed rain clothes three times.

The pathway mostly followed the Rio Tejo and was quiet except for a few runners and local walkers. We recognized only a couple of pilgrims whom we met several times through the day.

Ready to walk! Also ready for rain.
Camino and local trail markings
At this part of the Camino, marked by the shell, we share the Camino to Fatima, marked by the cross. Generally, the Camino Santiago is yellow and the Camino Fatima is blue.
Fatima, our transit driver
Fatima was our transport driver. She chattered all the way and gave us local advice.

beautiful pathways along the river divided for bikes and pedestrians
The pathways changed some, but this was a particularly nice section with regular benches and directions for bikers to separate from walkers. They recently hosted a Triathlon in this area.
celebratory beers
Today’s hike was only 10.5 miles but we were tired when we reached the hotel (a 12-pound pack doesn’t help!) we continue our tradition of a cold beer upon arrival.

Comments:

Dan Hendry: They’re off and running!!! Love the way you say “only” ten miles. Hope the weather gets more consistent so you aren’t always changing clothing. Jan, hope your foot is doing well. 2022/09/14
