It was a short day after our overnight stay in Reykjavik. We were to be back on board at 1:30, ready for a 2 pm departure.
Richard’s ReLive video is here: https://www.relive.com/view/vE6JA379NxO
3.76 miles for the day; cool but sunny weather.
Our first stop was the Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Center, home of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, the Icelandic Opera, and the Reykjavik Big Band.
It opened in 2011 and is praised for its architecture as well as concerts.
Unfortunately, we were only allowed to visit the first two floors, but there was a oucture of the concert hall.
Reykjavik’s Cathedral is a major landmark seen from all over town. The exterior resembles the basalt columns that form most of Iceland’s landscape. The cathedral was consecrated in 1986, and has a 73 meter tower with an elevator that can whisk visitors to an observation area. Sadly, Richard did not have time for a view.
A statue to Leif Ericson stands before the church. It is a gift from the USA on the one-thousandth anniversary of his birth. He is regarded as the first European to land in North America nearly 500 years before Columbus.
A decoration on the pulpit. Windows are glass (not stained glass) and furnishings in the church are sparse.
Walking back to catch the shuttle bus back to the ship, we passed what must be the best restaurant in Reykjavi. Two kitties wait patiently for its opening.
The captain said 800 of us were in town one hour before the supposed last shuttle bus was to leave. It took a while for them to get organized, but despite the long queue, we did leave close to our expected time. We had plenty of time to chat with Cheryl from Melbourne, Australia’s. She lost her husband 7 years and eight months ago, and shared that she writes him a letter every month to let him know how the family is doing.
Sailing away to our next port.
